The History of Boutique Hotel 't Klooster in Pietermaai, Willemstad
Boutique Hotel 't Klooster is located in a beautifully restored historic building in the heart of the vibrant Pietermaai District in Willemstad, Curaçao. This charming hotel has a rich story that dates back to 1886, when the Brothers of Tilburg (Fraters van Tilburg) arrived on the island to establish primary education.
In 1932, the St. Albertus Monastery was built by the Brothers, next to the existing primary school and near the iconic cathedral of Pietermaai. The Brothers remained active in Curaçao until the 1980s, playing a key role in the development of local education and community life.
STORY TIME
From Monastery to Boutique Hotel
After decades of religious use followed by a period of vacancy, the former monastery was purchased by a foundation in 2007. Renowned Curaçaoan architect Lyongo Juliana was commissioned to design a complete restoration plan, transforming the historic site into a modern and comfortable boutique city hotel.
With the support of the Monuments Fund of Curaçao, the restoration was successfully completed. In 2009, the hotel officially opened its doors as Boutique Hotel 't Klooster, welcoming travelers from around the world looking for a unique hotel experience in Willemstad.
